Warning: Your Soul Can Be Sold… But, Not Leased!

“If you sell your soul to get ahead it will cost more than you bargained for. When you earn your success and never take something for nothing, no one can lay claim to what’s rightfully yours. My biggest investors, now deceased, ask nothing of me. They are the only ones I owe for a debt I can never repay; but it’s the only kind that will ever be worth carrying.”

Many, throughout the years, after making a less-than-stellar decision, have uttered the phrase… “what else could I do?”!

Who am I to question your decisions… when you are the most qualified and only one accountable?

Unfortunately, we don’t get the option to only lease our Souls… but we can and many do, sell all or parts of them. How much will you get for the parts or all of your Soul… a fraction of the significantly higher price it’ll cost you, if you want to re-purchase what you’ve sold!

How many times have you “sold out” because it was convenient, fit into social norms or basically, was primarily for a self-serving decision in one way or another?

Here are several ways we can sell parts of our Souls.

  • Doing things at work that are self-benefitting, to the demise of others; or, it’s good for you, and you don’t really care how it impacts others.
  • Looking the other way, instead of stepping in, to help a relative, neighbor or stranger.
  • Climbing the organizational ladder, using people for rungs.
  • Leading a Non-Profit, primarily for your benefit (e.g., lifestyle quality, not needing to work as a middle manager in the private sector, etc.), vs. working in the Non-Profit primarily to support the Non-Profit’s mission even though the pay and conditions are less-than-attractive.
    1. This is particularly common when you see Non-Profits only raising enough money to hit their self-determined goal vs. the maximum amount they could raise to optimize the number of people they could help.

If you’re the CXO of a company, hospital, government or Non-Profit…

  • How much of your soul have you sold to get to your level?

  • What percent of the decisions you made during your ascent… primarily helped other people and not yourself?

  • If you were born in a developing country, vs. a first-world country… how likely would it be, that you would become a CXO in a large organization?

Q:  Who has the highest potential to positively change the world?

A:  Bluntly; people in positions of authority!
