The Fear of Falling in Love With Work, People & Life

“Remember, depending on another is not the same as a dependency,

but sometimes the two are easily confused and without proper balance,

it is easy to build a dependency or either become overly independent.

.

But being overly independent also puts a strain on a relationship.

This type of independence can stem from the fear of losing yourself within the relationship.

.

This fear brings about erratic behavior and subconscious sabotage in order to advert losing yourself.”

Have you actually taken the time to write out the eulogy to your own funeral?

Why would anyone want to participate in such a morbid-sounding activity? Here are 2 reasons:

  1. It forces you to come face-to-face with your own mortality; so you can begin living, loving and appreciating life at a completely higher level and along with those imperfect people who make it beautiful!
  2. It forces you to script out (literally to the second) the 5-Minute Highlight Video of Your Life. This enables you to:
    • Clearly understand where you’ve been without any sugar coating.
    • Effectively set priorities in your life moving forward; knowing, nothing lasts forever and Amazing is a rare, elusive treasure that can slip through your hands like sand, that self-sabotaging decisions enable.
    • Recover from / Amend past mistakes instead of carrying them with you to your grave.

Have I written out my own eulogy?

Yes; although I’m only on the second draft of my eulogy and the first draft of the 5-Minute Highlight Video of My Life.

Here are a few of the takeaways:

  • It’ll blow you away on how emotionally beautiful some people, experiences, etc., have been in your life!
  • It’ll make you genuinely prioritize people, purposes, etc., in your life for the very first time (really!).
  • It’ll give you an impenetrable level of courage, just as it did Scrooge in Dicken’s classic, “A Christmas Carol”, that will enable you to fail, be embarrassed, etc., in pursuit of your new priorities.
  • It’ll make you laugh at the small things you over-reacted to, socially-accepted scripts you were using that didn’t apply to your unique life and will force you to acknowledge all the opportunities you forfeited (sigh!).

Yes; I wrote out, by the seconds (literally) what I would see in the 5-Minute Highlight Video of My Life. The great / awful news, I didn’t use all 300 seconds!

If we live 100 years; that’s roughly 3.2 Billion seconds.

How small is 5 minutes or 300 seconds of our life?  Let’s just say, 1% of 100 years = 32 Million seconds. 300 seconds is miniscule!

What should you include? The nth degree of specifics!

What won’t be included? All the self-centered decisions, actions, etc., that made you feel good… at the time!

In my 300 seconds, there was very, very little on work, sleep, eating or education.

  • Yes; I was in the Top-1% for income at various times in my career, which most people would consider successful… but, it didn’t make my 300 seconds.
  • Yes; I earned a Master’s Degree, which 92% of the U.S. population didn’t… but, it didn’t make my 300 seconds.
  • Yes; I’ll spend roughly 42 years of my life (at 10 hours per day for 100 years) just eating and sleeping… but, it didn’t make a second in my 300 second Highlight Video.

So what does make it to this elite, rarest of rare, 300 seconds?

In one word, the common thread to what made up my 300 seconds, was “Love”!

Here are the characteristics that made my 300 seconds:

  • Times when my heart and soul were touched by someone who unconditionally loved me for who I was.
  • Times when I felt the world stop turning, time stood still and it paralyzed me as though I was a statue. In my eulogy, I’ve appreciated the specific people who created these moments, to thank them one final time.
  • Times when I lacked the courage to select a fork in the road that could have changed my life. Regrets… so, so painful!
  • Times when I gave, when I had nothing to give. Yes; at times I had nothing; yet, this feeling was awesome, humbling, hyper-appreciating for what I did have and nervous, all at the same time.
  • Times when I gave my time and finances to people, who would never connect me to the benefits they were receiving.
  • Times when I stood up for the under-appreciated, bullied, etc., and protected their family income, self-esteem, etc.
  • Times when others stood up for me when I was down, out, lonely, in pain, not understood, etc.

Yes; I encourage you to take the time, bring a box of tissues and push your way through this. It won’t be perfect, but it’ll change the way you see life!
