Are You Forfeiting More Than You Think?

“We forfeit three-quarters of ourselves in order to be like other people.”

Do you overvalue what you have?

Do you undervalue what you don’t have… what you’ve forfeited through your decision making?

What you have, is easy to measure; but what you’ve forfeited is difficult to accurately measure!

Nonetheless; however difficult it is to measure what you’ve forfeited,

should not preclude you from, as objectively as possible, measuring it!

Why?

You have decisions to make today and in the future that will significantly impact you professionally, personally, etc.

\

Thus; if you don’t figure out how to objectively measure what you’ve forfeited, how will you prevent continued forfeiture in the future?

Here are a few ways people typically prefer to subjectively measure forfeiture.

.

1.  “I need to forget about it, since it didn’t actually happen.”

+  It’s a nice and neat way to (not) measure, especially from a mental standpoint, but extremely flawed.

.

2.  “I’ll do better next time, but don’t want to objectively measure what was possibly forfeited.”

+  Again, it’s a nice and neat way to (not) measure, especially from a mental standpoint, but the measurement of what was forfeited is typically inaccurately biased in favor of the decision maker’s decision, which subjectively, inaccurately and significantly lowers the value of what was forfeited.

.

3.  “I really need to look at this with people who are likely to disagree with me and who have a higher Holistic-DMQ (Decision Making Quality) than me, to better understand what was forfeited.”

+  This approach provides an opportunity to measure what was forfeited more accurately.

.

4.  “I am about to forfeit something of significant impact and really need to think this through, to understand what I’m potentially going to forfeit.

+  Thus; Holistic-DMQ is enabled and optimized proactively.

Warning:  Just because you take this approach doesn’t mean a good decision is actually made; since, Holistic-DMQ ranges from 0.0 to 10.0 (with 10.0 being theoretically perfect). Thus; taking this approach, but being a 7.5 decision maker; will still result in a 7.5 decision.

One of my tests for mental fortitude in others, is their level of need, to dichotomously separate their past into primarily two buckets.

.

People with lower mental fortitudes tend to recall decisions they believe turned out well for them (even if it (objectively) really didn’t turn out so well or they just got lucky, but they’ve convinced themselves that it did). Meanwhile, for decisions that didn’t turn out so well for them, they choose to forget about them as though they didn’t happen. When you ask about those less-than-stellar decisions, typically some ambiguous attribute such as intuition, gut, etc., (vs. Holistic-DMQ, which includes these soft skills) wasn’t followed. This is a red-flag for Holistic-DMQ.

Personally, I don’t hold onto my past in a mentally negative manner; rather, I do hold onto it as an always present, how do I use it to make objectively better decisions now.

Professional Forfeiture:  I’ve left millions of dollars on the table because a partner unexpectedly sold his proprietary software to a F500 company. This hasn’t prevented me from building new partnerships, but the experience does impact how and with whom they’re built.

Personal Forfeiture:  I’ve had the privilege to date women who were mostly amazing, spectacular or awesome. None of the relationships ended amazing, spectacular or awesome. Just because these  relationships ended, hasn’t prevented me from appreciating how amazing, spectacular or awesome they were while helping me to better understand myself and clarify the unorthodox, holistic attributes that attract me.
